| How Do I Make My Own Concrete Mixture? |
| By Greg Vanden Berge |

I wouldn't suggest mixing your own concrete for a large project that
needs more concrete than you could possibly mix in one day. In other
words, if you're building a house foundation or a large room addition
foundation, you might think twice before mixing your own concrete.
There are three simple building materials that are used to make concrete
and they are cement, sand and gravel. The most common cement mixture
used by concrete suppliers of these three building materials will be.
One Part Cement
Two Parts of Sand
Three Parts of Rock or Gravel
An example of making your own concrete mix, before adding any water can
be created using a 5 gallon paint bucket. Each one of these parts can be
put into a cement mixer or wheelbarrow and then premixed, before adding
water.
1 - 5 gallon paint bucket full of cement
2 - 5 gallon paint buckets full of sand
3 - 5 gallon paint buckets full of gravel

| I used the 5 gallon paint bucket as an example, but whenever I am mix
concrete, I use a flat shovel as my unit of measuring. I open up a bag
of Portland cement and then pull out one shovel full of cement, two
shovels of sand and then three shovels of gravel and place them into a
wheelbarrow or cement mixer.
I only mix my own concrete this way, when I am working on small projects
like sidewalks, patios and home repairs that don't require a specific
structural concrete mixture.
